Opening Ceremony and Dinner for Class 2008

The opening dinner for the Master of Science in Global Finance program has been held on 28 November, 2007.  It was our pleasure to have Professor K C Chan, Secretary for Financial Services and Treasury Bureau to be the Guest of Honor who provided us a speech explaining the needs in developing finance professionals in Hong Kong and also congratulating to our launching of this new finance master degree program in Hong Kong.  Besides, President of the HKUST Professor Paul Chu and the Acting Dean of the HKUST Business School Professor Leonard Cheng also attended our event and delivered speeches recognizing the successful and strategic partnership between NYU Stern School of Business and the HKUST BusinessSchool, also to welcome our participants for the first intake.  Professor Ingo Walter, who is the Vice Dean and Dean of Faculty from the NYU Stern School of Business flied all the way fromNew York to join our function and also to give weight to the partnership and also the program development.  Besides, we were delighted to have our Associate Dean of the Business School Professor Steve DeKrey and faculties from the Department of Finance to join our opening dinner.


Besides guests from the HKUST and also NYU, we were glad that senior executives from the finance industry also came to share our joy and show their support to our program, such as Mr T C Chan, the Deputy Chief Executive of the Bank of China Hong Kong, Mr Andrew Fung, Deputy General Manager and Head of Investment & Insurance of Hang Seng Bank.


There are 32 participants with an average of more than 10 years of working experience for the first intake and they are key executives in their respective companies.  Nearly half of them work in Hong Kong and others are from Singapore, Taiwan, Japan, Mainland China, Korea,India and the US, etc. It is a diverse group of people in nationalities and also businesses that they are in.  Most participants come with finance backgrounds who are working in HSBC, Standard Chartered, Societe Generale, Kookmin Bank, Zurich, New York Life, Ping An of China Asset Management, KPMG, Deutsche Bank, Polaris Capital, etc.  However, among those with finance backgrounds, they are with different expertise and perform different functions in the finance areas.  Therefore, even among those participants who are in the finance industry, their experiences are still diverse.  And on the other hand, we also have participants with non-finance backgrounds, such as participants from Nestle, Lufthansa German Airlines, The Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce, etc.   With a very diverse group of people sharing the same goal in gaining comprehensive finance knowledge, it is also a challenge to faculties.


Our program is the first and only executive format finance master degree in the Asia Pacific. It is designed to provide a wide range of finance knowledge to participants which covers Corporate Finances, Derivatives, Fixed Income, Financial Engineering, etc.  It is a one year part-time degree program, classes are mainly held during weekends from Friday afternoon till Monday noon.  In addition, there will be a 2-week New York in-residence period next summer. Together with the monthly classes, participants are required to finish an integrative project in a years’ time.



Again, we thank everyone who has contributed to make this program happen and congratulations to participants of the first intake of this program.  We hope they will have fruitful education experiences and a pleasant stay with us.
